Humbert
www.humbert.net

The pride of Hialeah, this quartet of musical merrymakers has years-old roots in the South Florida scene, but its music is most certainly of the here and now. Plant the Trees Closer Together, the band's second album on its own Sportatorium Records, rivals anything released in the past year on a major label in terms of hooks, pop appeal, production values and, most of all, fun. Humbert's songs can sound both childlike and jaded ("Warped Tape") with unabashedly joyful melodies riding shotgun to lyrics about romances gone sour and hopes for those still to come. But Humbert doesn't deserve notice for Plant the Trees alone: The group is simply one of the best, most exciting live acts around, if not for the band members' wisecracking, between-song banter, then certainly for its standards-raising songcraft. Simply put, most local bands only wish they were as good as Humbert.
