GEORGETOWN, Colo.—
If you've ever driven up to the mountains in the winter, I'm sure you've seen all the action on Georgetown Lake. It's frozen over this time of year with ice that's two feet thick - perfect for extreme ice racers who take their sedans, SUV's and tricked out jeeps out for a spin. For my "Extreme Kellie" series, I got to hang out with the drivers of "Our Gang Ice Racing". They're an ice racing club with about 20 members, who've been taking advantage of the winter conditions for the past 34 years! Every weekend from January to March, you'll see them out on the lake spinning out!
Club member Colene Byers tells me that the best part of ice racing "is the challenge of getting around the corners and getting in between the cones, without hitting them... and hopefully beating that person you haven't ever beat yet".
Last weekend, about 200 people came out to give it a try. For a small fee, you can drive your own four-wheel drive or all wheel drive street car. It's a fun, safe way to enjoy your vehicle and learn some tricks to driving in the elements!
The club members walked me around the track and showed me how the race works and within minutes, I was behind the wheel! My second time out, I actually won a race! I even got to gear up with helmet and all, and drive a 400 horsepower comp jeep... that's when the fun really got started! Sliding out and spinning around corners, trying to cross the finish line was such a rush. THIS is how winter driving should be!
