Denver Police investigating toddler's drowning as possible child abuse
DENVER - It happened Tuesday morning at an apartment at 1095 S. Quivas near W. Mississippi. Outside the modest apartment is a growing memorial for 11-month old Anahi Juarez-Gonzalez.

"She was really outgoing. She was crawling and already taking her first baby steps," said a relative who only wanted to be identified as "Maria."

Inside the apartment is a grieving mother--shell-shocked over the sudden and unexpected death of her baby.

Maricella Gonzalez-Gonzalez says in Spanish and through tears that her daughter died in so much pain, and that she still hasn't gotten to see her.

"Very unfortunate case where a relative was watching this little girl and, at some point, the relative found the child in a bathtub," said Denver Police Det. John White.

Police won't say how the child ended up in the tub, but Maricella said her husband's nephew was bathing her. They don't know how Anahi ended up drowning.

"You go somewhere. You leave her. You never expect to get that call that you're never going to see her anymore," said Maria.

Candles flickering in Anahi's memory, sit next to a donation box to pay for her funeral.

Her stuffed animals remind them of what they've lost. But also what they have to live for--a nearly 2-year-old son and another baby on the way. Maricella is four months pregnant.

The Denver Coroner did an autopsy but won't release any information pending further studies.

The immigrant family is lower-income and needs help paying for their baby's funeral.

Friends have set up the Anahi Juarez Memorial Fund. Donations can be made at any US Bank.
