Ski patrol and Flight for Life provided life support and transported Gans to an ambulance. She was transported to the Breckenridge Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Witnesses report that she was skiing very fast when she ran into a tree. The cause of death is pending investigation but the Breckenridge coroner's initial assesment indicates the death was due to blunt force trauma of the chest.

The girl was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
