Aurora attorney says police took his car in retaliation for defending minorities
Civil Rights attorney, Derek Cole says Aurora Police are retaliating against him for his work with Blacks who have been in scrapes or shot by police.

He claims that following a police accountability rally on Juneteenth Saturday, his Volvo was ticketed and towed by four cops Monday morning while he was in court.

"I moved from Denver to Adams County last July, that is when I re-registered both of my vehicles at considerable expense," said Cole.

"My new registration is good until the end of July, but police told me their DMV data indicated the plates and stickers have been expired since March of 09. I can't figure out how they pulled old records, claimed perhaps that I stole the stickers, but never gave me the benefit of the doubt by calling off the towing and ticketing when the info and plates failed to match."

Police say their officers tow about three cars a day for expired tags, but in this case they admitted they made a mistake and offered to let Cole pick up his car with no fees or charges. Cole says he gave the City unit 6 p.m. Friday night to return his car, since he says they ticketed and towed it illegally.

But Chief Dan Oates is reported to have said he will begin charging Cole storage and impound fees at 6 p.m. Friday if Cole fails to pick his car up from the impound lot.

Well, it seems as if both have said a line has been drawn in the sand and neither is willing to budge. Cole says he will file his lawsuit Monday morning against Police and the City.
