23-year-old UNC Student Jennifer Hudgens was killed when a pickup truck slammed into a Visionworks store at the Greeley Mall. (July 13, 2010) |
GREELEY, Colo. - In Greeley, the memorial grew outside of a Visionworks Store at the Greeley Mall, the place where a pickup truck slammed into the building, killing two women inside. 32-year-old Kimberly Fletcher of Greeley and 23-year-old UNC Student Jennifer Hudgens died when a pickup truck slammed into the store.
The truck was driven by 29-year-old Peter Lain of Evans. Police are still investigating the accident and so far have said they don't think Lain was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In fact, many witnesses say they saw Lain with his eyes closed as the truck jumped the curb and then rammed the store. They also say the wheels kept 'burning rubber' when it stopped inside the store, giving some credence to the thought that Lain, might have been having a stroke or seizure when the accident happened. Police did ask Lain to sign a release so they could look at his medical records.
Thru a family spokesperson, the Lain family said, "We feel terrible about what has happened and share the grief the families of Ms. Hudgens and Mrs. Fletcher are going thru. Our son is saddened by what has happened and is himself trying to cope with the tragedy."
Services for Fletcher will be held in Haynes City, Florida on Friday, while a memorial will be held for Jennifer Hudgens in Pueblo on Thursday at 4pm.
A memorial fund has been set up with Wells Fargo Bank to help UNC students with costs associated with starting their student teaching process, which is what Hudgens was set to do. She was working full-time to off-set costs she will had while doing her student teaching.
Police have not filed any charges against Lain, while they continue their investigation it is thought they are checking his medical records to determine what his medical status might have been at the time of the accident.
