Wet & Wild Commute

Dave Kingsbury and a friend canoe across Gross Reservoir. Nederland, Colorado. (June 24, 2009)

If you think you've heard too many stories about Bike to Work Day, think again. A Nederland man is taking things to a whole new level.

Dave Kingsbury not only commutes from Nederland to Boulder - he does part of the journey in a canoe.

Kingsbury, and advertising executive (his title at Crispin Porter + Bogusky is Cognitive Anthropologist) along with his friend Christian, a molecular biologist, invented the "Canute" as a way to have fun and get to work, eventually.

"It's an awesome way to wake up and I get 2-3 hours of riding before I get to work," Kingsbury told us.

The "Canute" won him Bicycling magazine's Bike Commuter of the Year honor.

The first half of the journey is on single track bike trails. The second: crossing Gross reservoir in a canoe. And the last part: on Flagstaff road heading into boulder.

Dave and Christian don't do the Canute every day, only when the weather allows.

They say it's an example that anyone can incorporate different modes of transportation into the daily life.

"Start easy, shoot for once a month or once a week," Kingsbury says. "Just look at your trip between your house and office as an adventure."
