BOULDER, Colo. - A Sunshine Canyon father and son who snuck behind fire lines to rescue a pet and get valuables out of their house, was shocked to see the devastation.
Gene Fischer and his son Chris took pictures and video in an effort to document the scene so that neighbors could know for sure what happened to their homes.
"There's so much misinformation," Chris said.
Two neighboring homes were completely leveled, but the Fischer home was untouched.
Video shows how the fire burned right up to the front door, but did not touch the home.
"It was unbelievable," said Chris Fischer.
"It's just an emotional rollercoaster," said Gene Fischer.
At one of the neighbor houses, all that was left standing was a statue of an angel.
The Fischers say they are relieved so many of the trees are still standing, and they believe Sunshine Canyon will recover.
But with high winds expected, they know they aren't in the clear yet. "Right now we are very lucky. Two days from now it could be a totally different situation," Chris said.
