DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche lost their shot at the Stanley cup Saturday night as the Sharks took a 5-2 win over them ending the series 4-2.

The Avalanche were down 3-2 with two minutes to play when they pulled their goalie. The Sharks made two quick goals to seal their playoff contention.

San Jose Sharks' Joe Pavelski scored twice, including the tiebreaking tally midway through the third period, to lift the Sharks to the series-clinching win.

Pavelski and Dan Boyle scored 1:29 apart in the final period, propelling top-seeded San Jose into the next round. The top-seeded Sharks will have to wait to find out who they will face in the Western Conference semifinals.

Devin Setoguchi and Douglas Murray added empty-net goals in the final minute after the Avalanche pulled goalie Craig Anderson for an extra skater.

Marek Svatos and Brandon Yip had goals for eighth-seeded Colorado.
